Both lavender and cedarwood & lemongrass shower steamers can turn the last five minutes of your day into a real wind-down moment, but they get you there in very different ways. If you gravitate toward soft, floral, sleepy notes, reach for lavender. If you want something warmer, woodier, and more grounding, reach for cedarwood & lemongrass. Both are made in Canada by Zen & Hearth using essential oils, and both fit into the same 5-minute aromatherapy ritual. This guide walks you through the differences and helps you pick the one that suits how you actually want to feel when you step out of the shower.

Quick answer: which one should you pick?
Choose lavender if you want the classic "help me switch off" scent. It is soft, powdery, and floral, and it is the one most people already associate with slower breathing and softer lighting. Choose cedarwood & lemongrass if you find florals too sweet, if you want something that feels warm and earthy rather than pretty, or if your evenings feel more like restless overthinking than tired-and-wired. Cedarwood brings a grounding wood note, and lemongrass lifts it with a bright, herbal edge so the blend never feels heavy.
Not sure yet? Zen & Hearth's Personalized Shower Steamers let you buy either scent as a 6-pack, so you can try one bar first before you commit to a case.

What does each scent actually smell like?
Lavender
Lavender is the most recognized calming scent in aromatherapy. Our Lavender Shower Steamer is made with lavender essential oil and smells the way you would expect: soft, herbaceous, gently floral, and a little sweet. Traditionally used in aromatherapy to help create a calm, restful atmosphere, it fits naturally into a bedtime routine. If you have ever kept a sachet in your pillowcase or lit a lavender candle before bed, this is the shower version of that.
Cedarwood & Lemongrass
Cedarwood & Lemongrass is our grounding scent. Cedarwood brings a warm, dry, softly woody base that reads more like a quiet cabin than a spa. Lemongrass sits on top with a fresh, grassy, citrus lift so the blend never feels sleepy or heavy. Traditionally used in aromatherapy to create a settled, centered self-care experience, it works well for people who like the idea of relaxing but do not want a floral wrapping paper of a scent to do it.

When should you choose lavender?
Pick lavender if any of these sound like you:
- You already know you love the smell of lavender in candles, linen sprays, or garden hedges.
- Your evenings feel wired more than restless. You are keyed up and want to soften the transition into bed.
- You want a scent your teen or partner will also enjoy without much explanation.
- You are building a bedtime routine and want the classic starter scent for wind-down.
- You are buying a first gift for someone new to shower steamers.
Zen & Hearth's standalone Lavender Shower Steamers also come in an 8-pack, 12-pack, or 20-pack if you already know lavender is your scent and want to stock up for the season.
Pure lavender essential oil for a soft, floral, pre-sleep ritual. Available in 8, 12, or 20 packs.
When should you choose cedarwood & lemongrass?
Pick cedarwood & lemongrass if any of these sound like you:
- Florals are usually too sweet for you.
- Your evenings feel more foggy or overthinking than exhausted, and you want a scent that clears the air a little.
- You share the bathroom with a partner who does not love traditional spa scents.
- You want a shower steamer that works for a late-afternoon reset, not only right before bed.
- You are drawn to grounding, earthy scents like sandalwood or vetiver.
Cedarwood & Lemongrass is available inside the Personalized Shower Steamers 6-Pack, and it is also one of the six scents in our variety Shower Steamer Gift Set, which is the easiest way to try it alongside the other five without committing to a single scent.
One of each of our six aromatherapy scents in a premium gift box. Easiest way to test lavender and cedarwood & lemongrass side by side.
How to use either steamer for a wind-down ritual
The steamer itself is only part of the ritual. The reason a 5-minute shower can shift your mood is the sequence around it. This is the wind-down structure we recommend for both scents:
- Set the shower up first. Turn the water to a comfortable hot, not scalding, and let the bathroom start to steam.
- Place, do not dissolve. Put the steamer on the shower floor toward the back, out of the direct water stream. That controls how fast it fizzes and stretches the scent to the full 8 to 12 minutes.
- Breathe deliberately for 60 seconds. Once the scent rises, take five slow inhales through your nose, longer on the exhale.
- Save the steamer. When you are done, move it to a dry ledge. Showers under 5 minutes usually give you 2 to 4 uses per steamer.
- Follow with one calm anchor. Herbal tea, a lamp instead of overhead light, or two pages of a real book. The anchor is what tells your body the day is closing.
If you want a longer version of this ritual, our step-by-step evening wind-down shower ritual guide walks through the full sequence. And if you like the idea of rotating scents by mood, our variety pack scent guide maps all six of our scents to different feelings.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use lavender and cedarwood & lemongrass on the same night?
You can, but usually you do not need to. One steamer scents the shower for its full 8 to 12 minutes. If you want variety, we recommend alternating nights rather than layering two strong scents in the same shower, which can feel muddled instead of restful.
Which scent is better for sleep?
Both scents are traditionally used in aromatherapy to create a calming atmosphere before bed. Lavender is more widely studied and more commonly associated with pre-sleep relaxation, so it is often the safer first pick. Cedarwood is a strong choice if florals do not work for you or if your restlessness feels more like an overactive mind than tension. Neither steamer is a sleep medication, so treat it as one supportive part of a wider bedtime routine.
Is cedarwood & lemongrass a masculine scent?
It is often described that way in perfumery, but plenty of our customers of every gender prefer it. If you find florals too sweet, cedarwood & lemongrass is a fair pick regardless of who it is marketed to. Scent preference is personal, and it is one reason we offer a variety gift set: you can try all six and let your nose tell you.
How many showers does one shower steamer last?
A Zen & Hearth shower steamer fizzes and releases scent for about 8 to 12 minutes. If your shower is under 5 minutes, you can usually get 2 to 4 uses out of the same steamer as long as you set it on a dry ledge between showers. Longer or hotter showers dissolve it faster.
Can I use these steamers during pregnancy?
Some essential oils are best avoided during pregnancy. Please talk with your healthcare provider before adding any new aromatherapy product to your routine during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. For general essential oil safety information, the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy is a good starting point.
Can I buy a variety pack with both scents?
Yes. Our 6-Scent Shower Steamer Gift Set includes lavender, cedarwood & lemongrass, eucalyptus & mint, rosemary, tea tree & lemon, and grapefruit, so you can test both nighttime scents side by side and decide which one you want to buy on repeat.
